Google is so successful that it’s the most-searched-for term on Microsoft Corp.’s Bing search engine. However, the company did not simply mock its rival but did it as part of a legal strategy.

The European Union fined Google a record €4.3bn ($5bn) last year for breaking competition law by imposing its search and browser apps on Android phones.

According to statistics compiled by SEO company Ahrefs, “google” is indeed the top searched term on Bing worldwide. It’s followed by “youtube,” “Facebook,” “Gmail,” and “Amazon,” but it beats the runner-up by around 5 million searches.

The EU accused Google of using Android’s success in the smartphone market to make Google the default search engine.

Google argued that the conclusion is unfair.

“People use Google because they choose to, not because they are forced to,” Lamadrid said. “Google’s market share in general search is consistent with consumer surveys showing that 95% of users prefer Google to rival search engines.”

According to a statistical compilation of Ahrefs, “Google” is effectively the most entered term globally in Bing, with 40.96 million monthly searches. This figure “represents 13.2% of the entire global search volume,” they explain. YouTube is in second place in the ranking, with 35.28 million.
